Default Fur to Polygons

Hey guys, I'm pretty new to Maya, I usually use Cinema 4D. I was just wondering how you get hair to attach to certain polygons?Everytime I select the fur it always goes on the whole model. Can anyone help?

paint a greyscale map that defines where the fur is placed and where it is not.

or alternatively search the forum

3rd last post is the one you want.
