Default texturing transparency problem

I've been following the simply maya sword texturing tut http://simplymaya.com/movie_pages/tu...html?tut_id=26 to get started on texturing my models.

However i'm having a problem when I apply the 'blank.tif' (provided with the tut) to the transparency on the lambert. In the tutorial it gives some transparancy to the lambert and 'blends' the textures. When I do it the lambert is set to fully transparent and disapears so none of the textures are visible.

This is driving me nuts!

Thanks in anticipation !!
