Default how do i make scratches and rust?

I'm trying to make textures for my models in photoshop but i never get them to look very good.
I know that scratches and rust and so on makes it look a lot more real but i haven't found any good way of making rust and scratches. Does anyone know a good way of making these sort of things?

One way is to get a photo of some sratched up, rusty metal, paste it as a new layer on top of your texture, then play with different types of blending and the transparency setting for the layer until you get something that looks good. You can make a few layers like this and really build up lots of detail.
