Default translucent material

hello again!

in the attached pic i am trying to make the pregnant belly section translucent so we can see the baby inside. my only problem is i can make the area transparent by creating an alpha map jpeg of the area and adding it to the transparent settings of my photoshopped colour uv map but i can't make it translucent, it's completely see through or not.

so how can you help me chaps.

the uv map that i created and coloured in photoshop had an alpha layer when i exported the targa but for some reason didn't link up as i'm told it should.

some pretty stupid questions from me lately (and in general) but i'm soooo very tired. all over monday so big big sleep for me.
