Maya 7 corrupting files

Hi all,

I hope someone can help. I'm using Maya 7. I spent a long time modeling a character in polygons and then converted to subdivs. I saved various versions as I went but when I try and open those files today, all I get in each one is a tiny part of the model in wireframe mode (unable to be changed into 'smooth shade all').All the layers have gone too. The parts are in the inspector but not in the modeling space. It seems like it's been corrupted. Is this something that people have come across before?
