Talking Alpha Fighter

There are many great 3D artist on this board.

I just starting modeling this Robotech Alpha Fighter.

Does anyone know how to create afterburner effects for aircraft in Maya? Your help would be most appreciated.

One way to create a beam of fire or anything like that is to use a spotlight with a fog and put some color to it and then put a texture on it. I do not know if there is any easier ways because I am new to Maya myself.
