painting/texturing.

hello all. im very new to maya, and just learning basic polygon modelling at the moment, but I come from an artistic background and Im looking to get stuck in2 painting, or texturing as its called in maya(?). How do I go about this? For example, I have spent the last 3 hours creating a tank, and its the best the thing ive made so far. but i dont want it to be just grey. what are my next steps? Ive heard about using photoshop? but surely i cant export my tank in2 photoshop to paint on it. do i paint paint the texture in photoshop then export it in2 maya? i imagine thats more complicated than it sounds?
