Hello - here is a bit of an update.

I did a bit more work on the textures and have added a barrier to stop people falling off the cliff.

I have also been working on the lights - what a headache! At the moment I am having problems with the shadows - I thought that using a directional light would give me parrallel shadows, but as you can see, I must be doing something wrong.

I also added some artificial fog - I spent the last couple of days messing around with the settings without much luck - when i zoom into my scene and render, things start to look very murky as you can see in the next picture.

Any ideas?

This is the same scene from a different angle - very foggy.

nice touches arran - is the wall like a forcefield as it'd be cool to have it translucent and maybe glowing a little

the fog closeup actually looks quite cool and gives the scene a different mood. Would a play on the depth of field give the objects further back a murkier blurry look and would that look good? Maybe not but just a thought user added image

Keep it up! user added image

Tatooine

Its actually named after the place in Tunisia where they filmed. Little bit of SW knowledge. Sad but geeky user added image

Nice work Arran. Bit too foggy for my taste...

Hey R@nSiD, thats a very intresting avatar you have there. Looks very much like something out of a movie that I have seen. user added image

Anyway, back on topic. Arran, have you tried Mental Ray on your scene yet?

Hey there,

arran it's coming along nicely. I agree with T1ck about the fog creating a different mood with the camera zoomed in. From a distance the scene looks rather idyllic but the narrow shot makes it look like it's in the middle of a dust storm.

Take it easy,

Mat.

Hey everyone - thanks for all of the great feedback.

yeah, i've actually been to Tunisia and could have taken a trip out to where they filmed star wars, but I think we ended up sitting on the beach instead.

I haven't done too much over the last few days - I imported the last few details, such as the tree roots and the hot tub (which you can't really see, but is important nonethelessuser added image ) and I also sorted out the shadows and added a few backlights.

The atmospheric fog is still giving me a headache, but I seem to have it working a bit better. I have also increased the glow on the forcefield, though I am still not sure about that.

Here are a few screen shots.

I think this image will be fairly close to my final entry. I am also planning to include a few close up shots as well.

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone else who participated and also a big thank you to the Simply Maya moderators for running these challenges. It has been really helpful to take part and I look forward to the next one.

Good luck to everyone else! user added image user added image user added image
