Bullet Mesh collision problem

Hello,

I have an object that I want to shatter when it falls and hits the ground and I was trying to use Maya's bullet dynamics to do it. If I make every piece a rigid body with the collision shape left to the default of box, they all fly off once the sim starts. If I set them to mesh, they all fall together nicely but when they hit the ground they penetrate into each other. Same goes if I use Hull as the collision shape. Any ideas how I can fix this?
