Is my computer not powerful enough for maya

I have a built pc. It has 2 GB ram ati radeon 9600 vid card, 16x dvd burner. Amd athlon 64 3000 chip. And a MSI motherboard. The other day I was unfolding uv's in 8.5 and maya ran out of memory. I thought my system was adequate enough not to have these problems maybe I'm wrong. By the way this is the first time this has happened. Maybe it's because I had my heads up display elements poly count on.I have heard it could drain memory.

Windows have some serious memory management problems.

I've a high polygon scene that will crash a Windows system with 2gig ram but renders fine in a Mac with 1.5gig ram.

I'm guessing 3 GHz.

It's not the processor.

Maya will tell you that it has run out of memory on the log.
