UV mapping when I've got a texture - but it's mapping to default grid

Hi,

know when you map, and you've not assigned a texture, you get the black and white grid? I've assigned a texture, but any new maps I make are assigned to that grid. After each map, I have to keep on selecting my whole object, and reassigning it to the material which has my texture, whichis a bit of a pain. Even if I connect the edges, I still have my texture on most parts, but with patches of the black and white check.

Anyone know what's going on?

thanks,

gubar.

Under the UV menu make sure Assign new material to projection is turned off... I don't have maya in front of me right now, so I *think* that's what it's called.
