Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 2
This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

MarlonJohn - Winter Challenge

My sport is dodge ball ... Going to try model a old man/geek character and have him suited up in a funny outfit while in some sort of pose.

I am still finalising what im going to do, though i will post up some sketches maybe or something like that so you have a clue at least to what i am doing,

GOOD LUCK to all and cheers,

Marlon J

@ speedy - Haha yeah, was trying to go for a funny approach in this one user added image

Heres a bit of an update. Did some basic shaping on the weekend and heres the result. Still gotta get the perfect shape i want for the head, and also get this topology right for some later in the future animation user added image

(Forgot how hard it was to model a head haha!)

Cheers,

Marlon

great progress MJ! However there are many other ways to model a head. I see alot of people using the one poly at a time approach. I have done a few practice heads using the process. I felt it gave me more control over the topology, but thats just my opinion.

agreed with the above, but that's largely because I'm a max-head user added image

certainly nothing wrong with either approach, but it could be worth a try when you've got time.

Anyway sweet concept. This oughtta be a fun one. Take your time on the character design. That'll really make this piece shine. Have you sketched what you're going for with the final composition?

@ THX1138 - Thanks man... Yeah, i reckon also that the one polygon at a time does give you better control on your topology, though i haven't really tried that method yet. So i gotta do the old fashion way and start with nurbs, the convert to polygon, then gotta split my topology in :p

@ Funky - Yeah might give it a try later on after this challenge since hey, nothings never to late user added image Yeah actually having fun doing this at the moment TBH user added image As for the final composition, i do know what the character will look like though, i am still deciding on the pose. I yave got three in particular so i might give them a basic sketch and see what you guys prefer user added image Cheers dude,

@ speedy - Thanks speedy, haha cool user added image

Heres a bit of progress on the body, just started to get the basic shape like usual. I know that the body isn't really well proportioned, such as it looks like the body's stretched in the Y-Axis though i think i like that lanky kind of look user added image

[wireframe is in subdiv by the way]

Got the basic shape of the foot, now just gotta get the topology right and pretty much the same on everything else. Still got a lot of work to do still as i want this pretty realistic charactoony.

Polished up the body topology, just gotta now define the muscles.

Hopefully, will have the modeling finished by the end of the week user added image

Comments, Crits anyone?

EDIT:

Heres just a quick list of the things i need to do(reminder really)

MODELING:
head: refine topology, refine detail.
body: refine detail.
hands: refine topology, refine detail.
foot: rework topology, refine detail.
Enviroment Scene(Peice of cake, i love doing that stuff)
