Introduction to Maya - Rendering in Arnold
This course will look at the fundamentals of rendering in Arnold. We'll go through the different light types available, cameras, shaders, Arnold's render settings and finally how to split an image into render passes (AOV's), before we then reassemble it i

First Sub-D Effort

Well, I wanted to learn Sub-Ds so I started on this Doggie... I will continue to post as I refine and texture him!

Yup you're right babyduck - the seam will be removed when I have finished modeling, since the other side is an instance at the moment user added image

Just done a little more, I think the eye sockets need more work and I am not sure about the teeth. Do they make him look a little too savage?

Right, done a little bit more. Worked more on the eyes and made the snout wider. Haven't merged the wo halves yet since I wanna do a little bit more sculting before I start texturing - which I am looking forward to BIG TIME!

So now I have added a rough body and arms and handies user added image

Hands and legs and feet keep moving...

Well I have been working away at me doggie and he now has a bottom half! More tweaks to his anatomy and I will be texturing him.

One thing I would ask other Sub-D modelers is I have an athlon 1.2ghz with a GeForce 4 Ti200 - not too slow - I have found that when I go to polygon mode to extrude polys or edges it seems to take a while to do so. Then when you manipulate the extrusion it slows down a bit... Is this normal? or am I doing something wrong? Or is it just calculating the results of my extrusions? Is my machine too slow? The plot thickens...

I run a P4 2.26 and a ti4600 and I find that once my subd models get particularly complex everything does noticeably go on a bit of a go slow. So I normally make the basic shape in polys, convert to subds at level 0, reconvert and then do a lot in polys (going back to subds now and then to see how it looks). I find that way I can work a bit more precisely without things chugging along. Then I do some tidying in subds. Not sure if this is the proper way to do things but it works for me.

Nice feet btw. 8)

Witchy when you say you convert to and fro between Polys and Subs do you mean actually convert between the two types or flicking between Standard mode and Polygon mode modeling in Subs? Does that make sense?

As for the feet I modeled them on my own feet... I am thinking of going to see a chiropodist user added image

I convert to polys proper for the start of it. I remember reading that Howard did most of a model in polys before converting and thought I would try it and it works very well. I do use poly proxy later but most of the structure and things like cloth creases etc is done initially in polys. I tend to have a little group of duplicates all sitting together which are hidden in layers, so I can see changes and check what looked better before converting.

I am sure this is a terribly messy way of working (!) but I find visual aids are the best thing for me, having a training in the visual medium as a route to doing practical stuff means it's a way of working I am happy with.
