Stupid Extrude

hi everyone,
at the moment im doing a modelling tut of a ford focus, it says select all the edges, extrude, scale it in a bit then move it into position. however when i try that it just moves all the edges in different directions. wondering if anyone knows a setting or something that would change it.
posted a pic of what mine does and what it should look like
