Complex UV Layout in Maya
Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

Just another reference while your doing the fur.

This was done by someone over on cgtalk.com. I thought this was okay and may be helpful. May generate some ideas.

Hhahaha! Looking really good! The only thing that deserves some work yet is the interior of mouth. It's looking too smooth. But is coming very nice. Congratulations!

haha, I first looked at the picture before reading what you said and I thought that was your gorilla. I was gonna say, "Wow, it changed a lot really quickly. realistic too!"

Be patient, buddy. One day, that pro was a noob, like us. Don't let your model now, he's coming very good.
I don't know yet how to render layers properly. Maya's documentation covers this in detail. But from what i know:
Below the Channel Box, you can see Maya's Laers. You have display layers, and render layers. Last ones are what you're looking for. I guess all you should do is to create 2 layers. Assign your gorilla in one, select your fur, and assign the second. Maya will render separate images for each layer, that you can composite in a program like Photoshop. There's a possibility of when you render the layer of fur, they will render fur as if your model doesn't exist. What I mean is that fur that is behind the model could appear, when it shouldn't. From the CGTalk's picture that was attached, you can see there's a render with fur and a black silhuete where the model is. i guess the guy has assigned the model together with fur in a layer, and put a black maerial over the model, in that layer.
I think this a start point for your research. maybe somebody here, that undertands this things better could help us with this too. Good luck!

There's a tutorial on this website about render layers. Check it out. The picture is of what look like green, shiny jacks.

Good work Mc-fleury - this is looking pretty cool. The mouth area is looking much improved and I like the intensity that you have achieved in the eyes.

Well done for taking the time to listen to other's comments and incorporating some of their ideas into your project.
