Complex UV Layout in Maya
Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

New user, first piece of work

I'm currently enrolled in an introductory digital imaging class at my college. We recently just had our first project assigned to model a room with object in it. Here is what I came up with. I've been working with maya for about 3 weeks now I guess. I'm pretty limited in terms of applying textures and lighting, as you'll most likely notice. Just wanted to know what some of you thought. Trying to figure out if I'm on the right track.

I'm hoping someone can suggest some good starting tutorials for me to work from, based on the lack of presentation I've provided you.

the tutorials that come with maya are great.
read what you need when you need it though, since you're learning this in college (university right?)

the model itself looks ok, it's good for only 3 weeks, you need to do something about the edges on that bath though. you're getting that weirdness in the colours when your faces are screwed up.
check how many edges are on the faces that make up the bath and check for whether or not they are soft or hard. (Go Display > Polygons > Soft/Hard Edges, hard edges will be full lines, soft will be dotted lines)
i find that the weirdness is caused by either non-planar faces (faces with vertices that don't ly on the same plane), faces with more than four edges (not always, but its sometimes the cause), or because of a mix of hard and soft edges.
...more likely than not the weirdness inside the bath is caused by the second reason. i'm guessing from the way the surface is shaded.... or it could be the last reason....
if you click display wireframe on shaded (an option somewhere in the panel's menu) then you'll see.

as for textures, it looks like you didn't lay out your UVs. until you know what texture mapping is, you should just assign solid coloured material (there is a free tutorial from mike in the video tutorial section that goes over some texture mapping i think)

also... what is that thing in front of the tv? the thing that's sticking out from the ground?

that's a "Ch" pronounced as a "K"

Computer skills I should have:
Objective C, C#, Java, MEL. Python, C++, XML, JavaScript, XSLT, HTML, SQL, CSS, FXScript, Clips, SOAR, ActionScript, OpenGL, DirectX
Maya, XSI, Photoshop, AfterEffects, Motion, Illustrator, Flash, Swift3D

It was intended to be a bat. It's a bad render, I could have moved the camera around to capture a better view. Thanks for all the tips though, I'll put them to use and hopefully they'll help me start to improve my work.

There isn't much that can be said other than you accomplished quite a bit at this point as you've been using the program for only three weeks, so critiquing wouldn't be fair as you probably haven't gotten to some of this stuff yet. As Chirone suggested, the help files are a great starting point, this site offers free ones as well, an so does Digital Tutors.
