Polygon Smooth

Hi, am pretty new to maya and am having some problems with the polygon smooth.

I want to smooth this polygon but when i do the edges of each face pull away from the sides. [as shown in picture]

When i fiddle around with the smooth options i can get them to stay in the right place bu then the object does not smooth it just adds divisions!

before smoothing:

Looks like you need to merge the vertices to me. Do you use SubDs any?

Hmm… seems odd that you got that then, because it usually happens with SubDs. Yeah, since you have Maya 2008, you don't need to mess with SubDs, just use the smooth mesh preview.
