managing viewport layout

can anyone give me advice on managing viewport layouts? specifically, how's best to go about saving a preferred layout and adding it to the toolbar. also, can you reset the default layouts stored there?

In the viewport menu, under panels click on saved layouts and then on edit layout. Click on new layout button. Assign a name. Thats it. You can even add it to shelf.

i kinda get the edit layouts dialogue - but how do i add it to the toolbar? - I've noticed you can replace the icon to represent the layout, but i can't remember how to replace the actual saved configuration...

Do you mean you want to replace one of the layouts on the toolbox on the left hand side?

If this is what you want then right click on any of the layouts in the toolbox which you don't need. This will show you a list of all the saved layouts. Select your customized layout. To add an icon, make one in photoshop. Icon file size should be (not sure) 30x 30 pixels in bmp format. To add icon again right click on your layout in toolbox and click on change image.

thanks maheshsubbiah -- I've got it now. This time round it was more obvious how to create a new layout and not butcher existing ones. Also, I was assuming that right clicking on the toolbar icons was selecting a layout, not assigning that layout to an icon.
All clear now,

thanks
