newb- whats a loop split??

yeah that normally uses the poly split tool to go around the model and create a whole loop - you could get the MJpolytools plugin - this makes that sort of thing much easier - sorry cant remember exactly where to get it from but search under that name and you will find it

btw.. a loop split is when you split through several contiguous faces.

all the circular edges around the eyes are edgeloops. They are made by loop splitting the faces around the eye.

I hope that clarifies it a bit user added image
