Single mesh rigging animation

I've just started experimenting with rigging. I've successfully rigged my character and and now wondering what to do next. I need to assign geometry to the joints so I can further animate my character. I'm quite confused on how to go about doing it. I've followed some tutorial videos but their characters have different parts of the body head, chest etc while mine is a single mesh. Is this a problem is it still possible to animate my character? Any ideas on what I should do next would be appreciated

You'll need to skin your character. Parenting and constraining is only good for mechanical things and low rez character representations.

In the animation Set
Skin > Bind Skin > smooth Bind.

You'll need to paint your weights, which is a whole new can of worms.
