hello at all!!!
I have 8.5 and I´m amused about the function of the file render abillity!
(That you have your Maya file and without open maya you can render the scene!)
But when i render without to open maya, then I haven´t final gather in my images. It looks like maya software render, but in the settings I choosed Mental Ray with final gather!

When i open the Maya scene and hit render in the tab the images are as expectet!
The reason for that procedure is that the system capabilities are much higer then to render when maya is open!!

you know what to do???

you need a mel script on the render globals (from my memory.., ) to use mental ray when you render without maya open. from memory.., if you batch file using only the file.., only the maya software is available.

dont know the script by heart (memory) but someone here might help.
