whats good blinn settings for metal

im making a sword, but i dont know how I would set my blinn settings in order to make it look as good as possible.

it's the reflections that make metal look good so look at env domes or raytraced reflections to make your sword look good.

not only reflections... if we're talking about polished metal (like for a sword for example) then keep your highlights sharp...otherwise make them broad...

one thing about metal is that specular and diffuse color component are pretty much the same.. so make your blinn color slightly bluish and specular color also... you'll get that cold steel look if you carefullly tune reflections with these settings..

technically speaking, there is no highlight in real-world...it's an effect seen in reflection (how ever small it may be) user added image user added image

Final gather or plugins for global illumination are good for nice metallic effects too.

put an environment map for reflections... make your color close to 0 and bump up reflections to almost 1

my reflections are at 1.. if i make my color 0, wont it be black?
and also i dont know how to use env maps..

well if you put your color to black and your reflection to 1.. it means you will get chrome effect - meaning all of your material quality will come from environment it reflects (sort of like chrome ball - hence the name 'chrome' in chrome ball) user added image

I messed with irradiance and chromatic arbaration.. and set color to zero..
