This course will look at the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. We'll look at what makes a good model in Maya and why objects are modeled in the way they are.

thanks man!! yea i have the Mp3 player infront of me and i have noticed they wouldnt sit like that well spotted user added image yea the wire does look kinda jagged ill smooth it out another 1. user added image good crit cheers.

What I like to do if I need to have something resting on a surface and looking natural is to convert it to rigids and drop it on the surface, at least you know its resting there, and the dynamics in maya sorts the positioning out for ya!!

Lazy I know but easy!

select the floor go soft/rigid bodies -> create passive rigid body

Then select the things you want to lie on the floor go soft/rigid Bodies Create active rigid bodies, then with them still selected go fields gravity, hit play and they should hit the floor, bounce a bit then stop (depending on how high they are), you can then set this as the intital set up via solvers initial set up all dynamic(i think, cant check at the mo) at that frame.

You can then delete the rigid bodies via the relationship manager

When you go back to the first frame they lie on the plane spot on or should do!!

You can play about with the mass, friction etc to have really good simulations of objects (try a bouncing ball just using dynamics by adding an initial push on the rigid ball and altering the mass and gravity magnitude etc)

I did a decent animation of those diamonds hitting a floor this way

thanks mate i did it the noob way but im gonna go mess with what uve said right now thanks again.

Heres the new render with most of everyones crit put into practice.

1) i added a slight blurry reflections to the main body.
2)Made the jack part larger.
3)got the headphones to sit more correct.
4)Smoothed out the wires too.

Looks mint man, dont ya think its mad that little differences make such a big difference.

One thing I get it that when youve seen the same thing over and over its hard to pick out things, more so when you've done it your self, ya need to try and sit back and look at it with a fresh set of eyes, so to speak.

Hey Magicsy - that latest render looks spot on. Well done. It sounds like that was a good tip about getting objects to lie flat on another surface.

I know what you mean gster123, about viewing your model with a fresh set of eyes. One way to overcome this is to use a mirror to view your model, though again, the more you do this, the more the effect begins to wear off.

Good job Magicsy - those new improvements have really pushed your model.

Yeah definitely the more u look at ure models u do miss lots of stuff i mean its kinda simple (floating objects) but i didnt notice so getting ure work on here really helps u get it perfect.

I think it looks really great. One thing just to make it even more realistic would be to make the wire a little more smooth. You can tell it is lower in polygons and needs some more.
