Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

Polygon to Subs conversion gaps in mesh

Hi all, I am very new to this amazing software and concept, I have worked in IT disaster recovery for years, and now want to expand my options, I have been following a great tutorial and have run into problems with my model when i convert from Polys to Subs, Initially i got the message about nonmanifold, I merged the offensive verts and the conversion works, However, after conversion the mesh has faces missing, I can post an image if i can work out how?

Any ideas?

Hmm, could be bad normals on your poly mesh.

Before you convert. Select the object. Then goto:
Shading>> Back face Culling.

This will make all the reverse sides of your faces transparent. This way you will be able to see if you have any faces that are facing the wrong way. If you do, simply select the misbehaving faces, and goto: Normals>> Revers Normals.

Also to fix any problems in your mesh goto: Mesh>> Cleanup!
And in the clean up options box, make sure 'Nonmanifold Geometry' is checked.

I would try the Clean up first, as this will fix any reversed normals as well.

to post a picture, just hit the 'prt sc' button on the top right of your keyboard and then open a new image in photoshop and paste.

but yeah - clean up will sort out your non-manifold problems.

Thanks guys, Once I have back face culling switched on, I can now see that there is a face missing on my model. Silly question but how do I add another face to fill this hole? Or is it a case of Merging verts?

Also I still seem to be unable to paste a pic into the post, I use MAC's so the capture method is slightly different (shift,cmd,4) but the result is the same as prt scn...

I am sure when you see the model you will know exactly what i am doing wrong..

Thanks again guys

the append to polygon tool will help fill a hole. not sure if it's called that in maya 2008 though.

is there definitely a face missing? backface culling may just make it look like there is... to be honest backface culling might just be confusing the issue... not sure.
