Stretching Tangent Handles

I cant figure out how to stretch tangent handles from the keyframe. I can adjust them, break them apart from the other side handles, but not stretch them to affect the arc of the curve (aside from rotating them). I believe you can stretch them because I've seen a picture in a book without instructions on how it was done. Please help.

It's kinda vague by what you mean but for easy and better purposes you could use an imagefile that could present the (little effective) tangent option. With an imagefile you could use anything you want to succes your results...

turn on "weighted tangents" in the animation prefs.
