Newell Beetle

I'm working on a compositing project, this time I thought it would be interesting to try something involving an automobile for once, so I'm doing a custom New Beetle. I'm planning on doing some modifications later.

I'm not too far along yet, but here's what I've got so far
This is my first attempt at a car, so I'd definitely appreciate any C&C

Yeah Toyota are cool, I had a Celica for a while but got back to VW eventually last year, I had a golf before and two beetles (originals) a 1972 and believe it or not an ancient 1963!!

Nice progress Funky, are you going for ultra realistic?

Sounds like you're into or have been into the vw scene jay user added image
My (to be) brother in law is well into it too, he's been restoring an old 62 beetle over the last couple of years and is verging on the obsessive side! I've to model him the car at some point which will be quite interesting.
Here's his progress site he made:

haha thanks, guys
nice work on the extra posts, I think that's actually the most impressive rate of posts I've ever gotten on a thread haha

Sorry for not updating ever... I've been extremely busy with school, family, and freelance- but time is freeing up. I did finish modeling a few days ago. Pardon the seats... I know they're crap, but I didn't want to work on them too long as they are not going to be seen (I know, that's not my usual policy user added image but this is for an animation)

Anyway here's what I've got so far, I'm in the process of working on the setup of the lighting and all for the composite.

very nice, very nice.
though i think you should raise the anti-aliasing up a bit.

A pint of example is worth a gallon of advice!!

worked a bit on the compositing and came up with this. Still got a little ways to go, but it's a start. Critiques definitely welcome as always.

Looks good but you can still tell its not ment to be there.
Shadows are in the right spot. I think it has something todo with your HDRI map, maybe try and get some reflections on the car that match the environment?

Its not the reflections here, look at the other cars, the reflections are barely visible in any of them.

As already stated there are tweaks needed ie: glass on the beetle is very dark, and the rims need some higher specular even though they are alloys.

What doesnt sit right is the perspective. I feel you are in need of putting the lens up to a higher setting, perhaps a 40- 45 is a good start. If you look at the front wheel on the Redder Car its almost the same size as the rear, suggesting a bigger lens, look at the beetle even though its a little further away the perspective is greater from the front wheels to the rear again making the lens too small.

Crack the lens setting, adjust the glass and rims ,you are done!! Good job overall dude.

Cheers

I think the lighting needs to be cranked up on it. The lowlights are fairly similar to the other objects but the mid range and highlights need that extra notch or two to make it look more 'in place'. It reminds me of a layer in photoshop that needs the contrast and brightness altering/upping.

Very nice model btw user added image
