South park animation

for about 3 months now i been trying to find out how south park is made i no how most of it is made now but there is something i still dont get the way they animate the people so thats what i need help with on the people they are these red things and they are pointed on each body part that moves i got a picture of what im talking about anyways what are the red things

the red crosses?? they are locators probably being used as contollers for different parts of the body they would be linked to the underlying skeleton
