UVmapping low poly characters

Hi , im working a lot with low poly characters
and when i uvmap them everything is going great including the head the torso the hands and the items . my biggest problem with uvmapping is on the simple stuff , like the leg and arm
both cylinders , but when im using cylinderical projection
all im gettin is a big mess ,,, both the cheacker map look and the uvmap . i rotate the cylinderical projection in the right direction scale and move but the uvmap still no looking good . some1 can give me some tips on how to uvmap those areas ??
