Default Importing the UV map back into Maya

Hi,

I'm trying to find a solution to the mess I got myself in which is as follows:
I finished mapping the UV's of a really complicated model which was hell and back for me and then I exported the snapshot. After that, I made the silly mistake of messing with the normals and the like without realising that now the UV map looked like a complete cobweb which is not reversible. (I only realised after saving the file)
Now I have the model of which I can delete the UV's of but I'm trying to figure out whether I could import the initial UV map I had saved out in the first place. The only solution seems to be transferring the attributes but that cannot be done in my case as it requires the mesh to be imported alongside the map itself.
Any of your kind thoughts and directions are very much appreciated.

Cheers.

Hi,

the map which you export is just to be used as reference for texture painting, it doesn't actually contain any data that could be used to rebuild the UVs. Do you have an earlier version of the maya file or the obj with the correct UVs?

I so knew I was going to UV the whole thing again...
Man, this really trips me up but thanks for pointing that out. Unfortunately I don't have another version
of the model.

Are you sure you only have one uv set? Sometimes you can accidentally crest a second uv set which needs to be selected in the drop down list. Tip turn on auto save!

Hmm, a slight glimmer of hope, I shall say.. but I don't know which drop down menu you're referring to. In the meantime, I will check every single one of them in sight, just in case I'd find it. Will post here the outcome soon.
Cheers.

Just open the uv texture editor and there is a uv sets drop down. you can have multiple set on one object!
Some times my geometry appears black in the viewport all textures gone!! nope just the wrong uv map is selected. Hopefully you may just have another set, fingers crossed.

I can highly recommend UVLayout at http://www.uvlayout.com/ I use this exclusively for all my uv'ing

Yep, now I see it but unfortunately there is only the messed up map there. I know and got UVLayoutPro but for reasons unknown it is not liking the mesh I'm throwing at it on this instance but yes, you're right it definitely is a time-save app. most of the time.
Many thanks for your input.

Cheers.
