Shadows issue

I'm trying to light this scene, and I kinda like it now, except that the chair and the ball and anything completely in the shadows seems to be floating. So basically I thought I'd put in another light so that it would make these objects cast darker shadows in the bigger shadow areas.
But I didnt like how that looked.

So, Is it possible to get 2 shadows from one light? like can I make the ball / chair in this pic cast a darker shadow WITHIN the shadow of the bed/wall?
I hope I'm getting across what I want to happen.

Thanks.

Youre very limited using only one light. Try rendering with mental ray with final gather and/or global illumination (if it's just a still) or placing several lights and rendering with maya software. With final gather you could add light with incandecent object such as a lightbulb inside that overhead light of yours, to make the scene more realistic. Lighting is an art in itself, good luck.

The solution for the one light problem is definatly mental ray. although, you dont need to use just one light because the window is your main light source. you can use multiple lights to cause a graidient shadow effect. Look into using fake GI (GI JOE). If you want to say in maya renderer instead of Mental Ray this may be the answer for you.

Notice how the shadows still have depth even though they overlap.

this is with only one light.
