selection problem

Ok i am having a problem. When i am in component mode like say control vertx. What i am trying to do is select a few vertexs on one pice of geometry wich is behind another one. What is happening is when i put a slection box around the vertexs and let go to select them i am also getting the other piec of geomerty in my slection. So what i have to do is hold my shift key and deselect the geomerty and the do my edit and then go back into component mode. What is going on is there a setting i have missed or what. I hope this all make sense. Let me know if it does not and i will try to be more clear.

not clear to me what you are saying. If you want to select geometry in front of other geometry then turn backface culling on. The option is in the shading section.
