Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

Need shader guidance for Mech lens

I'm trying to create a shader similar to the eye lenses in the sentinels from the matrix movies (the octopus machines). I've attached an image of what I've gotten so far but it's hardly photorealistic. I originally started out with a blinn and tried modifying it but couldn't seem to get the results I wanted. Then I tried reverse engineering some of maya's glass shaders which gave me the result in the image (no, it's not intergalactic lipstick =p). In a nutshell, this is what I'm trying to create:

1) a reflective, dark glass or plastic shader similar to the "eyes" of the insect mech that grabs Neo when he first awakens in the pod...it's blackish, but you can still see the light reflection in the mech's helmet.

2) With the same shader, I'd like to still be able to animate the attributes to give it a glowing red glass effect (ala the sentinel's eyes).
