Weight Painting Issue - Multi-color feedback all one color?

Hi all. I've used the multi-color feedback option/tool before, but I'm still relatively new to rigging.
Typically, with multi-color feedback on, the joints in the Influences list are shown as different colors, depending on joint hierarchy (from what I can tell).

This time, though, all the joints in the influences list are displaying as the base-level sienna/dark orange - any subsequent children are not different colors.

The plain black-and-white weight painting is working/displaying as expected, so I'm able to continue working, but I do prefer having the multi-color feedback as an option, and would like to learn how to avoid this in the future if at all possible.

Has anyone else run into this? Any ideas on what might have caused it / could fix it?
I've reset the tool, closed-and-reopened the file, quit-and-restarted Maya to no avail.
Thanks in advance!
