Tentacles

I'm trying to figure a way to animate a tentacle and was trying to use softbodies. Anyway to make this work? I obviously need the tentacle to keep it's shape but be moved around like cracking a whip. Any ideas on the best way to set this up?

Yeah, bones. I'd put a lot of joints then use the Spline IK tool, then create a cluster for every point of the curve that comes with the Spline IK, and nimate it that way. user added image
