Beer glass scene creation
This course contains a little bit of everything with modeling, UVing, texturing and dynamics in Maya, as well as compositing multilayered EXR's in Photoshop.

Arnold ambient occlusion

Basicly im just wondering how to get AO on objects with textures on them, in mental ray there was one output node for ao, and lambert has the ambient color to use as ambient occlusion. Do i have to bake the AO? I know how to bake it but that would be a long process since i've been working on a scene thats pretty much almost finished, and i'd rather not have to bake and redo all the diffuse textures ..

thanks

Ambient occlusion is generally something that would be applied while compositing, not in the main render.

So ill render an image, and one separate for ao, then combine in photoshop?

Yeah.....

Render out in layers and then comp them together in Photoshop,
so if you have just your main colour render and one AO render, take those two into PS and multiply the ao layer over your colour.

I just thought the other day that Ambient Occlusion was something I would render almost ten times out of ten when I was learning lighting and rendering. I would always multiply it over my primary render. (Which I subsequently found out is not the correct way to use it). I always did it anyway to give myself contact looking shadows. It's funny but I think it must be two years now since I was asked for and AO render or provided one. I guess as people use new renderers and new more sophisticated lights it's become one cheat too far.
