Object appears black in Arnold Render View

I'm fairly new to Maya and am trying to develop a basic character and wanted to test out what it looked like with lighting, but when I opened the Render View the base mesh was black, but the hair, teeth, and eyes are rendered properly. When I toggle "use all lights" in the viewport, it shows the skin/base mesh when I turn the exposure up, but the hair/eyes/teeth are overexposed. I've attached a screenshot

change the shader on the base mesh to an Arnold material this should at least show the base mesh as grey
