References/wireframes

I have the Tiefighter tutorial off of this site. I have put the references in using nurbs/plane. Everything was going well, but when I change the sphere to wireframe my reference picture goes away. I tried layering them and it still disappears when I goto wireframe mode. I am getting better at my modeling but its little things liek this that slow me down...grrrrrrr. Thanks in advance for the help.

I usually turn on the "Wire on Shaded" shading option and then take the model's transparancy down.
