I might have some sort of vents
but im gonna have a glowing thing in there but im having difficulty with incandescence i cant get it to produce enough light, i will also want a similar shader on a laser beam (like the ones in star wars)

Did you check out rest of your "glow map" thread? Theres some stuff in there that could help.

Nope, the shader lights the scene using FG the software renderer doesn't feature any of that. So you can either get familiar with MR or become handy with lighting/rendering with software renderer in order to "fake" it :x. Why are you using the software renderer anyway?

Just try it, you'll get tused to it pretty fast, just dont go mad with all the bells and whistles.

As for the speed, well, dunno, when you start to add stuff to MR yeah but for a "standard" render well its pretty much the same IMO

i'm beginning to think there is more to mental ray that just ray tracing the lights....
when you're not rendering in real time i dont see why you wouldn't just use MR,
i'm really stuck as to understand why anyone uses anything other than MR unless its for the particles...or does MR render particles?
