uv layout of a box / cube

hi all,

it should be simple but i just can't figure it out:

i want to take a snapshot of the uv layout of a simple cube, but when i apply automic mapping, the layout doesn't correspond to the proportions of the cube...

i also tried different side lengths to see if there is any difference in the uv layout, but they are all identical..

or am i just missing something fundamental ?
