lighting

ok dont know if this question has been asked before but i see lighting in games and they look damn realistic nowadays and this is all in REAL TIME. ok i know their lighting engine cannot produce the same quality of work as say mental ray but its almost comparable. So why does mental ray and the rest take so long to render such scenes ?

Theres a lot of tricks to it. Faking HDR, baking shadows an lighting into textures etc etc all helps out.
