tutorial help

I am working with the dragon tutorial. Obviously I pretty new to this. After following thru makeing a plane. creating a lambert and attaching the file. I created a layer. added selected object. deleted history. when I create a nurbs sphere on the dragon image the sphere takes up the whole screen. I can resize it but in the tutorial the sphere starts out a lot smaller. What do I need to adjust so that the sphere doesn't take up the whole screen when I first create it?
