Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

Ahhh... I see. ever try GI_Joe? Same results, but not dots, then again, the dots are a nice style depending on the image you are trying to get accross. Thanks,
your model looks great,
Brian

man, u got skills. Just wondering about ur workflow-- how do u combine polys with subd? I thought in modelling u have to start and finish the entire character from a primitive like a box or sphere ...at least thats what most tutorials empahsize.

i am not kurt, but i can answer anyway. there is no such thing as the perfect way to model a character. if the tut emphasizes you use only a cube to start with and do all with extrudes - than the tut i kind of crap - as it forces you to use the workflow provided in it. the easiest way to learn all the tools - throw away the tutorials and try yourself.

and concerning the connecting poly to subd is as easy as connecting a poly to a poly. sometimes it makes sense to make a body part real fast with hand - and then connect the poly to the subd in poly mode. and the attached poly will continue the subd perfectly. some exceptions apply if you want to attach to a subd - you must not create nonmanifold geometry for instance.

hope that helps

I agree with babyduck, but I also Use Nurbs along with poly's and subd's. When I am satisfied with the look of my patches, or shape, then I can convert it to Poly's or Subd's and merge vert's from there.
Thanks,
Brian

vizion, I model a few diffrent ways but mostly I start of with nurbs primatives (sphere's) to layout all the basic shapes as close as I can. Than covert them into poly once im happy with the shape. Then it just a matter of going back and forth between sub-d and poly adding and cutting faces to add detail. Another thing most of my models are not one piece the model above has a lot of diffrent pieces.

My work flow!!

Nurbs primatives (make basic shapes)
Nurbs to polys
switch back and forth between poly and sub-d for deatail

Great job Kurt! If I had a magic genie lamp, my first wish is to be able to do modelling like this.
