This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

Has anyone experienced this before. I have a Birail patch that goes Hay Wire when i put a lattice defomer on it. I'm including the file, try to put a lattice deformer on this patch and see what happens.

I found a way to fix my model but the event itself is still unexplained. If anyone figures it out, please post.

deleteing the history maybe?
when you bi-rail something it depends on those curves for temporary structual support,at least thats what ive found
it maybe something simple but history is what im thinking

Hi!

Up to Maya 4.5, the solution would have been to export the wayward surface as a DXF file and then reimport it. Sadly, with Maya 5 this workflow is no longer possible. user added image

What you can do (and it worked for me), is to use the script I have attatched (written by Paul Anand).

It's called nurbsExtractCurves, and does just that - it extracts a series of curves out of a nurbs surface, either in U or V direction.

After you did this, all you need to do next is to collect these and then loft. Voila!

I applied a Lattice to the new surface and it worked like a charm.

I recommend to create two shelfbuttons, one for every surface direction.

These are the commands you'd need to drag to your shelf:

For curves from U direction:

nurbsExtractCurves -u 1 0

For curves from V direction:

nurbsExtractCurves -v 1 0

NURBS sometimes show this strange behaviour. No idea why - maybe they're getting woozy from their own math. user added image

The DXF route used to help, but...

what makes you think maya 5 cant export DXF? i exported and imported and that cleaned it up. thats the fix i was refering to. but still this is strange how Nurbs can react sometimes.

The DXF route somehow doesn't work for me, as it doesn't for others I know of.

Which exporter plugin did you use? What settings?

Would be interesting to know.

Anyway, this script works pretty well too.

And yes - NURBS are strange things. Must come from the same source as do women... :p
