Problem renaming material in attribute editor

Hi all, I have a problem renaming the material I assigned to the body of this soldier. I chose "checker" as the pattern for the material and renamed it "checker_pattern", but the attribute editor automatically added a number after the new name, as you can see in the attached picture. What can I do to fix it?

It means that there is already a node with the name "checker_pattern" and even a "checker_pattern4". Choose a unique name.

If you open up the hypershade and go to the texture tab (I suspect) you will probably see the other checker patterns listed there. You can delete them if you know you don't need them or do Edit > Delete unused nodes.
