Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

Perfecto - March/April

I know I'm joining in late and only have a few weeks experience with 3D but I'm going to do this. And, I will have a finished model to submit in time.

I think I'm going to do some kind of a robot since that was what I was considering to do for my next project anyway. I will probably get my design ideas from steam engine trains and such. I'll work on a sketch tonight and post whatever I have, tomorrow. My goal will be to not get too detailed since I'm so short on time, but detailed enough that it won't look too lame.

Amen to that!! But that's always the hardest competition; you can always win and always lose when you challenge yourself, make sure that it's the present you that wins!

Thanks for the confidence booster everyone. I'm psyched up and ready to go. I just finished my initial concept sketches. I'm scanning them in and should be able to post them shortly.

i like it a lot , the asymetry gives it a lot of character.

just as a comment i am wondering if the legs are big enough, I can't see a side view but it looks like it's center of balance might be quite high so it could fall over easily if it's not very stable.

If you want your robot to be stable, I sugest you to add him one more leg with thouse weels. This leg should be where the tail sopose to be.
Nice concept, though.

I spent some time modifying the design of the legs. They're going to be totally different (but should be plenty of stable). I'll post the new design once I draw a better sketch. I wanted to spend a little time tonight getting the modeling started. Here's what I've done so far.

I was actually surprised I was able to get as much done as I did. I had to research how to attach a curve to a surface and then extrude (really cool tool). Anyway, I'm thinking I can finish the robot by the middle of next week. If so, I might try to model a futuristic steampunk fantasy train.

I have to agree with jsprogg's comment about asymetry; it definitely creates greater uniqueness. The rivets, "thick" borders, pipe (under the left arm), "stomach pannel" and the awkward eyes are all fascinating touches.

I got the idea for the pipes under the arms from "love handles", so of course I had to put one under both arms. I'm not sure what happened to his left eye yet, perhaps he was in some kind of accident (I'll be giving him a scar on his right cheek). Well see...
