SGI Octane 2 / Panoram Tech

I was wondering if any of you Maya Guru's user added image out there have used one of these systems before. I was asking as I might buy one of these at the end of next year. I just want to know first hand how these systems handle.

Here's the link for anyone that doesn't know about these:

SGI Octane 2

All I know at the moment is that these have a crazy graphics set up, and some animation studios use them.

Also, does anyone know about Panoram Displays and how they stack up against normal monitors. Bigger isn't always better user added image but from the specs, they certainly have a lot going for them.

Panoram Monitor

Thanks...

Congrats. You have found the best moniter on the market, and one totaly kick ass computer! Both of these are incrdible buys! The panoram Moniter, although I do not own them, i have used them. It makes life SOO much easier.

Think. You can have a tutorial on one side, Photoshop on the other, and maya in the middle. With some Maya plug ins, you can be following the tut, and be painting in photoshop, while watching the texture on your object change LIVE as you paint it in PS. Drag and drop becomes so easy, you'll do things you never thought of doing before.

And with vertual Desktoping, you can run Windows XP in the middle moniter, run a virtual Server 2003 on one side, and remote desktop another server on the other. IT manegers LOVE these things!

In terms of overall performance. do you think an octane 2 is the way to go? Or would something like a custom Dual Xeon system with a Wildcat 4 7210 be better?.............and a lot cheaper user added image

I'm sure IRIX will help you get a 3d job though. I know ILM use IRIS, and I'm sure they aren't the only ones. You are probably looking more towards animal logic though, right?:p Not sure what they use.

Neither am I, all the experience I could get the better. Animal Logic looks for a minimum of 3 years professional work for most of their positions and I have, as of this moment, none. :p

You should try contacting them. They might have an internship program, or some sort of training program.

I already found out about all that

From the site
"We offer long term, short term and full time contracts depending on requirements, and we are always on the lookout for talented people to join our company."

That's good information.

"Unfortunately, due to the nature of our business and the sensitive information held on our premises, we do not participate in work experience or internship programs. Besides, it's all a myth - you won't see explosions, stunts or Tom Cruise."

That's unfortunate. I would really like to do some sort of internship program with them. pfft, I bet there are explosions. :p
