Isn't Maya dead?

I wanted to learn Maya but I found out yesterday that Autodesk bought Alias.. Does that mean I should choose Max or Xsi..?
Sincere advice needed to this total novice who is seriously considering his career as a 3D Artist.

Even if it is dead, I don't necessarily plan on switching any time soon until I'm absolutely required to do so.

According to Autodesk, they plan on continuing both Max and Maya.

Discrete is owned by Autodesk, as is Alias -- I'm assuming they're going to continue Maya just like they continue AutoCad and 3dStudioViz alongside Max. In cutting Maya out all they'll be doing is pissing off nVidia and Pixar who develop their middleware for Maya.

What they'll do about the pricing's another story... I'm hoping I don't see an annual renewal on Maya Complete Student.

i read yesterday that Autodesk are going to axe 400 Maya jobs, mostly sales staff I think.

There are always job cuts when companies merge but half the workforce seems a little extreme to me .

user added image mm where did you read this? 400 jobs seems a bit much indeed :headbang:

Aha it was probably propaganda from the max fanboys..

Well whatever products Aoutodeska makes, they must be dead. They don't even come up on google.

Alright, I'm going to end this. Maya is not defunct, nor will it be any time soon. Too many studios have invested, and written their pipelines around Maya. Autodesk would be signing their own death-wish if they did decide to cut it. While the Alias website now directs to Autodesk, and Alias is now defunct, it does not mean the software is going away. This thread was also created 03-01-2006. Leave it be.
