Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 2
This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

Seleection priority?

Everytime I try to drag select some vertices the poly object geometry behind also gets selected i presume this is something to do with the selection masks at the top, but so far none has worked, or if it has the next time i select it defaults back to all objects which is very frustrating, any ideas?

backface culling... but you've got to set it in both the preferences and also in the current viewport's settings... and sadly even then it doesn't always work right *shrug*

why not try paint selection?
