softbodies

I'm not sure if this is a newbie question but I have two questions concerning softbodies.

1. I made the surface of the water live and then drew a curve/motionpath on it. I wanted to know if I could continue the path off of the softbody.

2. I can't scrub back or forth but I am animating so I wanted to know if there is a way to save the state of the water somewhere so that I dont have to start at the begining of the animation for the water to not be messed up.

Thank you!
