Complex UV Layout in Maya
Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

UV Mapping question

Ok, I am just learning about UV mapping and wanted to try making some planks of wood. I only did a UV map on 2 sides of the box, the top, and one side. I worked on it in photoshop and brought it in, and it textured the others sides, but textured them strangely with the whole tga picture.

Do I need to UV map every single part of an object? Is that how it is suppose to be done? Or, do you detach the sides you want, UV map them, and then combine them when you are done?

Any help would be great!! Thanks!

either you UVmap only the half of it - but then you would have to delete the other one an duplicate the other half, or you map the whole object.

thing is, every part you don´t map will I think be kind of automapped when created. and every vertex you move afterwards will also change its position in the UVset. but that may be b******t as well what I say.

in every case I´d suggest to map every part wich is used in your scene.

One thing to note, especially for objects such as these, when you uv map, you can set up so that UVs overlap so that faces actually share the same area of the texture map.

Also when you assign the file, you can assign it to just the faces you want rather than the whole mesh.

I think I understand what you mean when you said that I can overlap uvs, I just need to uv map everything, and then put the uvs to overlap ontop of eachother in the UV map editor screen (but I would have already had to individually uv map each section, this case each face and then place them overlapping). Did I understand you correctly? I hope so. Thanks a lot for the help guys.

You mentioned also that I could assign the file just to the faces I want, how would I go about doing that?
